Reducing anxiety without medication: Have you tried to do it?

Anxiety affects 40 million people in the United States, and many of them are women. But there are things you can do to dissipate some of the crushing symptoms of Anxiety.

Bailie Saltzman, a contributor, describes the need for reducing anxiety symptoms without pharmaceutical drugs:

"Over the years, we’ve seen a huge shift towards living a healthy lifestyle. It feels like yoga, and Non-GMO projects are everywhere, and that’s a good thing! People are eating organically, cutting out chemicals, and making a conscious effort to be aware of what they’re putting in and on their bodies. I personally prefer living that sort of lifestyle! My hopes are that if I treat my body nicely, it will do the same for me. It will last longer, and I will feel better—and every now and again it’s ok to indulge in some ice cream, or binge watch episodes (or full seasons) of your favorite T.V. show.

 However, now we’re not just talking about the foods we choose to eat, but how living organically could help your mind and body as well. Is this possible, or have we gone too far? There’s a part of me that believes in traditional medicine to deal with mental health, but then I wonder how can I fully believe that if so much of me is dedicated to spirituality, mindfulness, and clean eating? I truly believe that it all works together. If you eat well, meditate, and practice mindfulness, you can reduce your stress and anxiety, AND if you see a therapist that can help as well. I prefer the holistic approach, and I don't necessarily believe reaching for a pill bottle is going to magically save everyone, BUT I know that in some cases medication is necessary.

A few months ago my stress levels and anxiety were unusually high. So much so that my usual yoga, exercise, and meditation wasn’t doing the trick. I started to see a therapist but wanted to make sure that the person I began seeing had at-least some of the same beliefs as me. I found the perfect therapist who’s approach was an equal balance of traditional therapy, and spirituality. Point being, you need to find what works best for you. Try reducing your anxiety sans medicine, if that doesn’t work there are many other approaches, and there is an approach that will work for you, but it might take some time to find it. Also, remember you’re not alone! There are millions of people suffering, and I’m sure you can find someone to talk to….maybe even right here on VProud!"
