What Does Human Trafficking Look Like Today?

Human trafficking still exists today in our neighborhoods and in our schools which is why it is important to recognize the signs.

Human trafficking, which is modern day slavery, still happens to thousands of people in the United States and millions world wide. But if you know the warning signs, you can help someone who is being trafficked. There are resources out there, like Polaris, Not For Sale, and the National Human Trafficking resource center. 

Kristen Zajac found these lists to share with the VProud Community. 

What are indicators of sex trafficking? 
  1. They a lack of control over their belongings. For example-- few or no personal possessions, not in control of their own money, has no financial records, or bank account, is not in control of her/his own identification documents (ID or passport), is not allowed or able to speak for herself/himself (a third party may insist on being present and/or translating).
  2. They are in poor physical health. For example-- Lacks medical care and/or is denied medical services by employer, Appears malnourished or eats as if ravenously hungry, Shows signs of repeated exposure to harmful chemicals, shows signs of physical and/or sexual abuse, physical restraint, confinement, or torture
  3. They appear unaware of their surroundings. For example-- they claim they are just visiting, lack of knowledge about what city they are in, or don't now what the date is.
  4. They have poor work and living conditions. For example-- works long hours or at weird times, can't tell you where they live, paid very little or only through tips, owes a large debt and can't pay it off.
  5. They exhibit poor mental health or abnormal behavior. For example-- fearful, anxious, submissive, and tense.

What should you do if you suspect someone is the victim of human trafficking? 

To report potential human trafficking in your area, contact the National Human Trafficking Resource Center hotline at at 1-888-373-7888. If you witness someone in immediate danger call 911 immediately as well.

Be the ‘eyes and ears’ in your community. After all, “you might be the only person to ever suspect they are a victim. Trust your instincts."
